Brent’s Hellgrammite

Hellgrammite tied by Brent Drew

This hellgrammite imitation was created and tied by my good friend, Brent Drew.  Yeah, yeah, yeah- woolley buggers work great for a hellgrammite imitation- but how can you not want to add a few of this pattern to your fly box this year?

A big thanks to Brent for sharing!

Material List:

Hook- Mustad 80050BR Size 4.
Tails and Antennas- Brown Goose biots.
Underbody- .030 lead
Dubbing- Mr. Peacock Brown.
Ribbing- Copper wire.
Gills- Small brown round rubber.
Top of thorax and abdomen- Medallion sheeting Brown.

  1. 48Mick Said,

Looks just ugly enough, but does it catch fish?

  2. gino Said,

hell yeah Hellgrammite’s catch mad fish…altho my version is a alot different, but i’ve seen them tied so many ways…mine is black hackle tail (nail polished stiff) black thread, black ostrich hearl wrapped to thorax, then red yarn wrapped, then black hackle over that with a bunch of black hackle pulled forward over thorax to finished head (usually put a little weight in the thorax to bulk that part of the fly up and give it weight.

  3. Gary Said,

Hellgrammites are poor swimmers. When they lose their grip on rocks and are swept into the current they ball up. The real ones I’ve seen in rivers don’t look like wooly buggers or anything resembling something long and thin. Are there any Hellgrammite patterns that look like large brown/tan egg patterns but with the impression of many short legs and pinchers or antenna?
