Top 10: Played Out Words in Fly Fishing

Posted by AC On June - 24 - 2009

enough

It’s time for our Annual Top 10 Most Played out Words or Phrases in Fly Fishing. Those words/things/phrases that have been used so much recently, that they’ve lost their cool.

10.) Brownlining

  • It’s sad to see such a clever word tossed around with the frequency of words like rod, line, and reel. And if I could’ve found the right font, there would be a nice big pic of the word, “Brownnosing” at the top of this post…

9 & 8.) Urban & Urban Assault

  • A stream is a stream is a stream is a stream. It’s all still fly fishing, no matter where it’s at- doesn’t matter if it’s in the middle of the wilderness, or in the heart of Central Park, so let’s just call it fishing; k?

7.) The “Lifestyle” of Fly Fishing

  • Still waiting for a definition on this one

6.) Fly Fishing Media

  • Anyone who spends a measurable amount of time contemplating the ins and outs of a minuscule segment of the media, needs to spend more time fishing- unless they’re part of said media- in which case, they should stop blabbering about the stuff they don’t know that they think they know.

5.) Micro Brews & Fancy Schmancy Imports

  • There was a time when throwing in a pic of your favorite, local microbrew or import was a nice touch to any fishing report. Now, it’s just another weird looking bottle.

4.) Bacon

  • I can only think of 1 or 3 people who have the rights to praise the gospel of this fine cut of pork.

3.) Anything to do with the 20 to 40 generation of fly fishers; with a heavy emphasis on getting them to buy stuff

  • Being at the heart of this target demographic, I can only offer this advice- just when you think you’ve got us pegged down, we’re gonna start liking something else. So to “get” us, you’re gonna have to actually be original.

2.) Purist

  • Close mindedness is out. Variety is in.

1.) Leave your suggestion for the most played out word/phrase/thing/etc. in fly fishing and you’ll automatically be entered for a chance to win a copy of Drift, courtesy of the Hatches DVD Store.

  1. mdaley01 Said,

    1. Any flyfishing product with an X, G, T, or Z designation. G4. T3. XP. Z whatever. It is hackneyed and trite, and makes as much sense as naming products based on human anatomy. The Orvis Hangnail. A Sage 905 Buttock. Simms breathable Scrota (the plural of scrotum).

    2. “Fish On!” Really? I never would have guessed. Do us all a favor and save such boisterous exclamations for the day you hook a sea-turtle, narwhal, Laotian hooker, or something similarly odd.

    3. “Expert Angler / Certified Caster” Not unlike suggesting on is a professional nose blower or registered wallet owner. Just silly.

  2. BigCliff Said,

    1- “EXTREME”

    2- “Tight Lines”

    3- “Sensitive”

    4- “Nice Ties”

    5- “Trout Bum”

6- “I always wanted to try that, I seent them guys out there doin’ that…” (flails hand like a drunk framing carpenter)

7- “Bamboo” (oooooooohhhh, that’ll ruffle some feathers)

    8- “Montana”

    9- “Abel”

    10- “San Juan”

Corrections- The marvelosity of bacon and quality microbrews shall never be “played out”. You should rescind this remark before Dog strikes you down for your ignorance.

And I’m declaring myself ineligible for the DVD, having already won it from a caption contest. (Thanks again, its a wonderful film)

  3. the roughfisher Said,

I echo some of the same overused phrases: Trout Bum, Tight Lines, Extreme, Urban everything, etc.

Other things that bug: online polls and lists, FF message boards, spey, BC, New Media, Social Media, steelhead, Helios/Sage/Simms/Abel/Tibor, old dudes, hairy balls, and pretty much everything say or post on my site are uncool.

Things not said enough: boobies, tater tots, dickweed, pole, motor boating, dingleberries, numnutz, and more boobies.

  4. Michael Said,

I’d rather let the next guy do what he wants, and call it what he wants, with the hope that he’ll afford me the same courtesy.

    BigCliff,
Should you win, I’ve got a different title in the vault I can send your way.

    Roughfisher,
I don’t even read your blog, so don’t take any of that personally.

BTW- good call on the boobies.

    MG,
Agreed, but this article has more to do with everyone and their mother overusing the aforementioned terminology.

  6. Ty Webb Said,

Here are a few things that are totally played:

1/ Wealthy clients looking down @ locals at the put in & takeouts because we are not wearing quick dry clothing

2/ Neoprine waiders & Nylon nets. Especially from Memorial Day to Labor day!

3/ Being interrupted to be told “(I) we only through dry flies”

4/ Overhearing at the dive bar closest to the river “the fishing is better on the Housy, Battenkill, Au Sable, (or insert name of river from 1500+ miles away here)”

    5/ Dissing on catching Whitefish-

  8. Jim Said,

Tug, as in “feel the tug,” or “the tug is the drug.” If I want to feel a tug I won’t be fishing. Also there is the soon to be played out “stick ‘em.”

Boobies are cool. Like them boobies, and long live bacon and microbrew.

  11. BigCliff Said,

Kamchatka cannot be “played out”, cuz I haven’t been yet.

I have, however been lobbying for it as 40th bday present with the household legislature since prior to marriage.

  12. KBarton10 Said,

I think it’s more than words that are played out … overused, really.

Imagery and certain constructs are getting just as bad.

Example: 1. The Grip and Grin pose (yes, we’re all guilty)
    2. The “Rifle” pose (also guilty)
    3. Youtube Music videos inserted as content on fly fishing sites (it used be different, or edgy, now it’s mainstream tired)
    4. Youth. OK, already, we’ve acknowledged that you ain’t your daddy, and don’t fish like Daddy, but other than complaining about being ignored, remind us again why we should keep celebrating the age difference?

  14. Thom S Said,

“Fast Action” Rods. Seems like “Whoa Bros.” line up out the doors for the latest and greatest (and most expensive) rods they can get their hands on. To each his own but I would like to see more variety in rod actions.

Flyfishing blogs that do top 10 most played out lists…

  16. Anthony Said,

Oh man – I know I’m probably guilty of using some of these phrases. So if you notice me using any of them from now on I’m doing it ironically.

1)Czech, Polish, French Spanish, European nymphing! Not that they don’t work! It just seems to me that many of these techniques (not everything) are really just new vocabulary for things that we all do in the course of nymphing anyway.

Most of the good ones are already spoken for but I have to also vote for:

    2) Brownlining: I like the concept, but the phrase is a little played out. It’s like the idea of fishing close to home urban locations wasn’t validated until somebody invented a phrase for it.

3)The “Rifle” pose as mentioned earlier. For some reason this type of picture really irritates me – maybe because I don’t catch fish big enough to use in the rifle pose! The 10″ brookie doesn’t quite make it.
