Fly Tying Tips, Videos — By on July 16, 2010 8:49 am

With rubber legs showing up in more and more fly patterns, one common problem fly tier’s are facing is that they get in the way when tying a whip finish knot. In this week’s Tying Tips, Hatches Magazine staff member Alex Cerveniak shares three quick and easy ways to keep those rubber legs out of the way.

  2. That is some great tips on keeping the rubber legs out of the way when finishing the fly. I teach fly tying and have found that students have a real problem when tying flies with multiple legs that are tied on one at a time using the figure eight method that I teach. Is there any other method I should try. Thanks and keep up the good work.

    Bill,

I think I know what you’re talking about, but could you expand a little so I know we’re on the same page? I’d be happy to address this issue in a future video.

    Thanks,

What is the best way for attaching rubber legs? Tying a knot aroung the hook shank?

    Brilliant Alex!
So simple, yet so effective. I particularly liked the straw method. I think there could be many other adaptations for using straws and similar items in finishing the fly when materials keep getting in the way of the whip finish.
    Best wishes
