Hatches 2011: A Furling Adventure by Al & Gretchen Beatty

When we put the words “furl, furling and furled” into an Internet search engine, we expected to get something about flytying. Instead we learned about social networks, wind turbines and sailing. Fly tying was so far down the list we didn’t pursue the search beyond the top
couple pages. We had to add the word “body” to the search to get fly tying results to appear.
Not totally trusting the volume of information on the Internet, we decided to give our trusty Encarta Dictionary an opportunity to help. Its definition for “furl” — at least in part — was “roll or become rolled up….and secured.”
OK, that was closer to our understanding of “furling” as it relates to fly tying, but the dictionary examples did not even mention tying. Their definitions referred to sails on sailing ships. After an hour of searching the Internet for more information on furling in relation to fly tying, we gave up. Instead we decided to share with all of you our personal furling background. What happened to the furling instructions
Made up some of these for use with a #8 and a #4 rod. Took a bit of work to get the lengths right but they turn flies over extremely well when you get it right.
Instructions are in 2011 edition of Hatches Magazine. Well worth the money to purchase it and also the back issues. Great resource!
