Show Us Your Bench #9 – Mike McKinzie

Fly Tying Desks & Tying Areas — By on August 17, 2011 3:22 pm

Mike McKinzie submitted his tying area via the FlyTyingForum.com Upload Page(and will be receiving a free fly box for his efforts) and I have to say this is one of the more creative uses of space that I have ever seen.

Here is what Robert has to say about his tying area

This is my “man cave” tucked away under the basement staircase. I made the desk in high school wood shop out of mahogany (many moons ago). The LED lighting over the desk provides a bright work area. Materials are generally divided by category among the pegboard and shelves to the right of the desk. Obviously, putting things back where they belong hasn’t been happening recently. The trash can shown on floor to the left of the desk was made out of a 3-gallon fiber drum using pictures cut from various fly fishing mags.

Great use of space. Thanks for sharing these. I’m getting started in fly tying. I work from home and am finding I need to make some good use of down time, but stay close to the computer. I hope to share my setup photos some day!

Harry Potter will be disappointed as it looks like he will need to find another cubard under the stairs. But I like you remodle of his place better

Nice, but it looks like a tight fit even for Quasimodo–which I guess explains the absence of a bell rope.

Innovative use of space, I particularly like the way you converted the small bookshelve for storage boxes for the tie flying materials. It appears to be very handy for a right handed person. I would give you a 1 for use of space but my wife would give you a 5 for neatness!
