Redington Sonic Pro Wader review

The recent years have seen many improvements in fishing outerwear materials and most specifically waders. Redington has now jumped the game with not only top tier materials, but in the way a wader is constructed. No thread, no seams, no holes… The Redington Sonic Pro wader.

Traditional wader construction consists of sewn fabric then sealing with water-proof taping to cover the thousands of stitch holes. These holes are where most waders fail and start to leak. The Sonic Pro technology features “Ultra Sonic Welding”, which is where hole are eliminated. Through the welding process the materials are just as (if not more) durable as sewn seams, but the welding process leaves the seams flat and eliminates wear and stress on the seam.

On top of the durability benefits, these waders are extremely comfortable. The cut and fit feels like they are individually tailored for you. This can be attributed to that the sonic seams allow for more seams without the risk of failing, this is really apparent in the knee construction.

More seams= More comfort and freedom of movement

There are 3 models in the Sonic-pro line
Sonic-Pro Wader Pant
Sonic-Pro Stocking Foot Wader
Sonic-Pro Zip Front Wader

While all three models share the same technology, I will cover the features in the Stocking Foot Wader.

So, comfort is one of the most important features in a wader and the ability to have more seams without the fear of failure really adds to the fit and performance of the Sonic-Pros. But they are also loaded with the bells and whistles that make these a top-tier product. The uppers feature 3-layer DWR fabric and a large portion of the lowers are 5-layer (the darker color). The front has 5-layer up to nid-thigh. And in the rear, it’s really nice to see the 5- extend all the way to the wading belt for added protection.

There is a kangaroo style front pocket, lined with brushed micro fleece and zippers on both sides. This pocket is perfect for keeping wet hands warm, and with the zipper-up zippers, you don’t have to worry about anything falling out. Also on top of the kangaroo pocket there is a vertical pocket, which I find perfect for a cell phone or small camera, and car keys. You also get a 2inch wide wading belt, and the loop placement keeps the belt up front when it’s open. This prevents you from looking like a dog chasing its tail when you go to find the ends.

There is a flip out pocket that is really a nice bonus on the stocking foot model of the Sonic-Pros. With a zip pocket, mesh pocket, a sleeve for forceps and a sturdy sleeve of rubber for retractors/zingers, you can carry most of your needs and then safely tuck them back into the waders.

There are also all the standard features you expect on a high end pair of waders… YKK water resistant zippers, gravel guards with anti-fouling lace hook, ergonomically shaped booties, d-ring storage, and a mesh carry bag. But all for a great value:
Sonic Pro Pants- $229.95 msrp
Sonic Pro Stocking Foot Waders- $279.95 msrp
Sonic Pro Zip from Waders- $379.95 msrp

I first had a pair of Redington top of the line zippered that had stitched seams and I LOVED them. Great fit but they started leaking. Redington replaced them with the welded seams model and they have not leaked, but they do not fit as well. The leg is much tighter and I have problems getting them on and off. The foot does not fit as well and seems longer and more narrow. Last the hand warmer pockets are not near as nice as the older style. I still love these but loved the older style more. If only they didn’t leak. LOL

My first waders and I love them. My buddies have Simms and for what they paid I am glad I went with these. Most places I fish I have to hike in and they are great. I don’t have to worry about them tearing or leaking. A must have.

These waders are not durable. After one season of heavy use – they’re toast. I’ve worn through the 4 layer nylon in the wear areas, and have applied numerous large patches in these areas. Now, the booties are leaking badly. When I went to reseal the seams and pulled off the neoprene tape, I discovered that the neoprene seams are only glued together and face seamed. This is not the proper way to construct a wader, and I think Redington have knowingly cut corners. I feel deceived.
