Hatches 2012: The Crowd Surfer Stone by Clint Goodman

For three days it rained, with constant clouds and freezing temps at night. Days were muggy and warm, and I swore nothing was going to dry in time for the drive home. OK, so it wasn’t like I was camping under the open sky being drenched by tears of the gods. But, cabin or no cabin, everything that I had was wet and adorning the furniture in an attempt to dry. As I tried to warm my bones beside the fire I decided that my last couple of days in Montana’s early summer would be spent inside, at the tying table, designing flies that might improve my odds against heavily fished trout that endure World War II-like carpet bombings from dry fly fishermen.

I fished this fly, I haven’t read the article, but I want to. Absolutely pounded fish in the central mountains of Idaho with this fly during the Salmonfly season, of course. Had a wild 19″ rainbow come twelve feet out of his lane to confidently gulp this at my feet after my buddy made a shitty cast to that magnificent fish. No problem, caught dozens every day I fished for weeks on end on this fly. No hyperbole. They aren’t exactly inexpensive, or easy/inexpensive to tie, though. The best adult salmonfly pattern the world has seen should be priced at a premium, I suppose.

Grant Bench, thanx man. Jeremy Anderson, I am really stoked to hear that you have done so well on the fly. I love fishing this fly as well and have had awesome days on it. In this article you will see that it isn’t as hard to tie as one might think. I am excited to see what twists people will end up putting on it.
