Well…. we don’t get these awesome materials in Malaysia. With a combined idea of a Fleye Foils and Fish Skull, I came out with this crazy idea of using artificial stick on nail which I found in my wife’s dressing table.

Materials:
Stick on artificial nail from your wife dressing drawer…
Daiichi or similar Saltwater hook
Craft fur
Polar flash
3D stick on eye
Marker
Clear UV cure epoxy – make sure it’s non tacky

Different size of nails

Fold the nail and trim to get the desire shape you want, stick on the 3D eye

Another view on the folded nail

Prepare the hook

Tie in the craft fur

Tie in some polar flash

Tie in the craft fur again

Apply some control gel super glue and stick the nail on

Pour in the epoxy to fill the base… some air will trap in the craft fur… this is good, that will balance the weight distribution

Dry it with UV light

Color the head and the craft fur with marker

Apply a thin coat of epoxy on the nail-head and now fill in more on the base

Dry it with UV light

Now the Nail Head Candy is ready

Great idea. Now we can be even, since the salon people have stolen all the fine grizzly hackle to tie into women’s hair!

Great idea; I would use it for a shrimp or crayfish carapace.

That’s very cool! I’m out the door to the drug store right now. They looked at me funny when I purchased large quantities of Sally Hansen Hard as Nails, this is really going to throw ’em for a loop.

    Thanks for the great idea!

Very innovative! If we only elected fly tyers to Congress, they’d solve all our problems in 30 minutes. I’m going to show this to Fat Albert this weekend. Thanks.

Really nice pattern and excellent usage of this particular material… Actually, gives excellent finishing and shape… also, you can use some sand paper to improve the profile of the fly. I have two questions:
    1) How do you get that green shade? I’ve tried using Sharpies, but the color dries and won’t change at all..
    2) What can I use to add texture to the surface before painting? Let’s say, to simulate skin or scales?

  8. Dron… great pattern and thanks for using my fly at the top of the page… honoured that it inspired you.

Patricio… Letraset Promarkers are the ones for subtle shading and the bet non bleeding red I have found is the Staedtler Lumocolor. A piece of advice though let the Promarkers dry fully before coating with your chosen coating…

Again nice tie… and thank you for sharing.

    Best regards

AWESOME TIE! I’M GUESSING THE NAILS ARE FLEXIBLE
AS NOT TO CRACK AND BREAK WHEN BENDING INTO SHAPE. OUR THEY EXPENSIVE? DO YOU USE THEM IN THE SURF OR THE BACK BAYS? THANKS AGAIN.

Check the ladies wig stores or ebay for artifical hair extensions or falls. They come in many colors and look suspiciously similar to ultra and near hair. For ten bucks you can buy a life time supply.
