Dennis Collier

As a young boy I would sit on the stream bank and watch my father fly fish, amazed and elated each time he plucked the object of pursuit from beneath the liquid mirror. And, like many, my introduction to fly tying came in a cardboard box labeled “Basic Fly Tying Kit” which Santa left under the Christmas tree one year. My life-long passion for the angling art was sealed at a very early age.

That was more than five-decades ago and since then I have logged countless hours on both lake and river – mostly in the Colorado, Wyoming and Utah areas. I have worked as a fly fishing guide and instructor, am currently an Umpqua Feather Merchants contract fly designer, and maintain my own fly fishing and fly tying related web site at www.dennis-collier.com. In a past life I was schooled in and worked as a professional medical photographer and commercial graphic designer; which probably explains the fact that I never leave home on a fishing expedition without a complement of cameras in tow.

In the eye of the beholder

While "grip and grin" photos are nice and often appropriate, I prefer to seek out and capture a variety of visual opportunities which present themselves as part of the whole experience of being on a favorite stream or lake. I am continually amazed and draw inspiration from the plethora of top quality angling photographers I see these days. They set a high bar for creativity and professionalism, to which I also aspire. I hope you enjoy the images presented here, they represent fleeting moments in time that caught my eye and interest.
