Pros
As a beginner's book I give it a 10. My son started with this book when he was 10 and was able to follow along with the well writen descriptions and outstanding photos. Skip is a very engaging writer. The focus on this book is to develop fly tying skills in a logical progression starting with simple flies and ending with more complicated flies. Each chapter/fly pattern has a great section on how to correct problems and troubleshooting.

Pros
As a beginners book, it is great. It covers everthing they will need to know for the first couple of years.
Cons Not enough patterns. There are flys in the back but no step by step instruction on how to tye them. I would like to see more of those flys with instructions on what materials to use and how to tye them.

Pros
This book is, by far, the best book for beginning fly tying on the market. If you follow Skip's progression of increasingly more difficult flies thru the book to the end, you should have mastered just about every tying technique there is. Once you finish this progression you should be equipped with the knowlege to tie any fly you want. It worked for me.
Cons There are none, I just wish I would have bought this book sooner.
