Trout Season Opens

You have to love opening day of trout season. It’s not so much a date, even though, technically it opens April 1, opening day for me is more of a fluid idea. The first is just a date where the limited choices of the winter are broadened. Open day, for me is that day when you wake up, maybe other plans are in the works but the weather or water temps screem at you, it’s opening day! It’s a mad dash to the closets to grab the five weight rod, matching line, gather up a makeshift leader because you failed to prepare, a butt section off a saltwater 12lber, and some tippet material should do the trick. It’s not going to be the dainty dry fly stuff up here anyway, just some down and dirty shot laden buggers and nymphs and a fuzzy indicator to flip into the muddy flows of April. Grab a few flies out of the plano bins I have been working on lately and hit the road. It all takes about a half hour but it’s very chaotic, and I know I have forgotten something, although I won’t find that out until I need whatever it was that is sitting in the top drawer of the dresser in the spare room. It’s a good drive to the river from my house, and a long time to stew on a decision, what stretch, which fly, how many people will be there?
The chances of actually connecting is very low, it always is this early, low turns out to be better than nill…
