Day 2 on the river for the group started off well, we got into the run we wanted early and had it to ourselves for a good chunk of the morning. We were in the upper river and Blake and Sal started out swinging flies. It only took a few minutes to get the sleepies out of their eyes and some quick instructions to get them throwing lasers across the river.

Whip worked with Tom to get into a fish on the indicator.

And Patrick took his 2 guys downstream

Sal was the first to connect during his cast and step routine, the fish took an egg sucking leech and came right to the surface. It was a shaker for sure and quickly came off. It hit on the dangle and sometimes it’s so hard to keep them buttoned.

The fishing started off slow, I don’t know if it was the low fog from the morning or that the fish had other things on their mind but we started to get squeezed by the boat guys so we headed off to find some solitude.

We found some, and we found some fish porpoising in the run. Every 20 minutes or so, one would show himself. With Sal’s new found confidence in swinging flies, he hit the run. Blake followed suit with the big gun (Sage 1409 Green) and we tried just about every fly in the box without a take.

About an hour into it, Whip walked up with Tom and chucked the egg into the head of the run….bang! Fish! And a turner and burner…The fish came towards Tom and then bolted leaving a broken tippet.

Blake grabbed his indy rod and hit a fish quickly.

This was the screamer we were looking for, It took the leader, line, and backing to the other side of the river, got into the undercut, came out and popped off about 5 minutes into the fight, the culprit was a clump of grass on the fly.

Tom landed a beautiful fish after that that took an egg, jumped twice and went way into the backing.

All fish we found from Pineville were quickly gaining strength and color and fought really well.
