Finally

I’ve looked and looked, I’ve driven by all the spots, no dice all spring.  Last year, the urban assaults were a success early, this year, they have been slow.  Today was different but it didn’t start out that way.  The first flat was barren and too quiet.  The smallies weren’t even there.  I headed out to the second, talking to The Wylie on the phone.  I crossed the first ridge and looked down, there they were…slowly meandering around in pairs to eights.

It’s funny about those golden blimps though, they ignore, spook, ignore some more, pay no attention to perfect presentations and then just when you get to the peak of frustration,

One just swims by and eats…

Just like that and they don’t seem to have any rhyme or reason.

Today I had 3 eats…one was a piggy I would estimate at 15 lbs and was well past the 20″ mark on the Scott.  I was pearing into the water at the edge of a flat casting to moving shadows and getting no response for a good 15 minutes.  I had just about enough of that and was about to move on to the next flat when I turned and saw him in about 8 inches of water, back breaking the surface.  I flipped the bugger in front of him and he heard it.  I was sunk, blown and made…then he tipped down, tailed once and I was watching my backing dissapear chasing the mud line across the flat….

That white speck next to the brown twig on the rod is 20″
